Louis XVI Temple Clock
Louis XVI Temple Clock
Elegant Louis XVI clock in white marble and gilded bronze, modeled like an ancient round temple, has a top composed of marble arches through which the mechanism can be seen. Above it, a globe with two enamel ring dials indicates the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals; at its top a winged man holds an arrow in his left hand and a bow in his right. The five fluted white marble columns have Doric capitals and quadrangular bases mounted with gilded bronze laurel leaves and sunflowers. The gilded bronze figure standing in the temple represents a vestal virgin. The round stepped base is in white statuary marble. The architectural design of the clock derives from ancient Greek and Roman temples such as those depicted by Hubert Robert and other artists in the late eighteenth century. It seems, however, to have been specifically inspired by the Temple de l’Amour, built in 1777-1778 for Marie Antoinette on the grounds of the Petit Trianon in Versailles, by the architect Richard Mique.
